Everything worked well. There was supposed to be a ticket redemption point between the Baptistery and the cathedral. As there wasn't one, we went straight to the entrance of the cathedral with our online ticket and got in without any problems. We found this information a little confusing. The monumental complex is very interesting and very impressive.

When I checked the website, it mentioned that only children above the age of 8 can climb the tower. When buying the tickets via Headout, it stated that only 11-99 requires a ticket. My child is 9-year-old. Hence, I only bought two tickets, one for me and the other for my wife. I emailed the headout support team to confirm whether or not my child would need a ticket. I was informed that my child didn't need one. When I got there, it turned out that anyone climbing the tower will need a ticket if they are 8 and above.

We don't think it's OK if the ticket only allows a free visit to the toilet. After all, there is so much to see with the ticket that you can spend the whole day there. And I don't know anyone who only has to go to the toilet once a day. The friendliness of the staff is very poor.

Loved going up the leaning tower. Views were amazing. Museums were ok. Not really my thing but there were some interesting historical information. The main buildings I really wanted visit was the cathedral & Baptistery, but sadly they were not open to the public that day as there was a religious ceremony taking place. Shame as I had paid the full amount to visit all 6 buildings which is quite expensive to only be able to visit 4 of these.

Our guide should be in Italian, it was the only one available when I booked. However, our guide also speeks English and this change that she did in the last minute was awesome (my husband and I we are Brazilian, we don't speek Italian but we speek English). It saved our tour. Besides that, she had great sense of humour and gave us a lot of information about Pisa and all the monuments. We rlhqd a great tome with her!!!

PisaSinopie Museum

Discover Pisa’s hidden frescoes at Sinopie Museum

The Sinopie Museum in Pisa houses the original preparatory sketches called sinopie, used for the Cathedral’s frescoes, offering a rare glimpse into the creative process behind Renaissance mural art. Set within a former hospital, the museum reveals the early vision and craftsmanship that once guided the masterpieces of Camposanto’s sacred walls.

How to access the Sinopie Museum?

The museum is located at the entrance of the Camposanto Monumentale, within the Pisa Cathedral complex. You can bundle your visit to the museum with access to other legendary sites such as the Cathedral, Baptistery, Camposanto and Opera del Duomo Museum within the Pisa Complex.

Things to know before booking Sinopie Museum tickets

  • The Sinopie Museum is a fascinating yet often overlooked gem within the Pisa Monumental Complex. It houses the original sinopie, preparatory drawings created beneath frescoes salvaged from the Camposanto after World War II. With standard entry tickets., you gain access not only to these foundational works but also to the finished masterpieces they inspired—spread across the Camposanto, Cathedral, Baptistery, and Opera del Duomo Museum. It’s an enriching way to trace the artistic evolution of Pisa’s sacred spaces at your own pace, without the physical demand of climbing the Leaning Tower. You can visit these monuments anytime within an year of your booking date.
  • Pisa’s monuments weren’t meant to be seen in isolation, they were designed to unfold as one experience. The Sinopie Museum introduces the story, revealing the raw sketches that shaped the frescoes of Camposanto. As you move through the Baptistery’s echoing acoustics, the Cathedral’s solemn grandeur, and the silent beauty of the Camposanto, the narrative deepens, each space layering meaning onto the last. And then comes the Tower. From its tilted heights, the entire Square comes into view, a panoramic moment where everything you’ve seen clicks into place. With Pisa Monumental Complex Tickets, you’re not just ticking off landmarks—you’re tracing a connected journey through faith, art, and time, on your own schedule, exactly the way it was meant to be experienced. Remember the while the Tower entry is timed, access to other monuments is flexible, you can explore them at any date within a year from your scheduled visit.
  • Originally established to safeguard the sinopie removed during restoration works, the museum also features multimedia installations that explain the fresco-making process. With a multilingual audio guide upgrade to the Pisa Monumental Complex Tickets, visitors can gain deeper insight into the techniques used by medieval and Renaissance artists, and the tragic story of the 1944 firebombing that led to the sinopie’s rediscovery.
  • The museum offers a quieter and contemplative space, perfect for those who want to understand, not just observe. To truly grasp the why behind Pisa’s art and architecture, and the how of its evolution, a guided tour elevates the experience. With a licensed local expert, you gain access to stories that aren’t printed on placards from hidden details, enduring legends, to maritime glories that shaped each monuments’ foundation. When your tour is upgraded to include the Sinopie Museum, it’s no longer just a visit, it unlocks an intimate layer of the story: guides help decode these raw, expressive sketches, explaining the purpose of sinopie, the fresco techniques that followed, and the vision behind each brushstroke. What might seem like faded outlines become alive with meaning, transforming the museum from a quiet detour into the artistic prologue of the entire complex. It’s the difference between seeing Pisa and being transported into its world.
  • The Sinopie Museum is open daily from 9am to 6pm, with final admission at 5:30pm. Winter hours (October to March) may vary slightly, especially on Sundays and holidays.
  • The museum is fully accessible to visitors with reduced mobility, with ramps and smooth pathways throughout the main exhibition spaces. Elevators are available to reach upper levels, and seating areas are placed intermittently for rest. Service animals are welcome, and accessible restrooms are provided on-site.
  • Entry is free for children under 11.

What's to see inside?

Sinopie fresco drafts

These original underdrawings, made with reddish pigment on plaster, were used by artists as guides for the Camposanto frescoes. You’ll see works by renowned 14th-century masters like Francesco Traini and Benozzo Gozzoli.

Interpretation panels & restoration stories

Detailed panels explain how sinopie were removed and restored post-WWII, after a fire damaged many artworks. These stories deepen appreciation for the skill and care behind each preservation effort.

Architectural layout & lighting

The museum’s minimalist design allows focused viewing. Natural lighting and clear displays bring out the fine lines and detail in the centuries-old sketches.

Historical and cultural significance of the Sinopie Museum

The Sinopie Museum offers a rare look at the underdrawings of the 14th–15th century frescoes from Camposanto, created by artists like Benozzo Gozzoli and Taddeo Gaddi. These sinopie were uncovered after WWII bombing damage and are crucial for understanding medieval fresco techniques—especially the giornata method, where artists painted section by section on fresh plaster. The museum preserves this fragile stage of artistic planning, rarely visible in surviving fresco cycles today.

Best time to visit:

  • Best time of the day: Early morning or late afternoon, when the museum is quieter and natural light enhances the visibility of the sinopie.

Frequently asked questions about Sinopie Museum tickets

Is entry to the museum included in all Pisa combo tickets?

Access to the Sinopie Museum is included only with select combo or all-in-one tickets. Some tickets may offer the option to upgrade and add museum entry.

Can I visit the Sinopie Museum on its own?

Technically, yes—but it’s best experienced as part of the Pisa Monumental Complex, especially when paired with a visit to the Camposanto. Seeing the sketches and the final frescoes in sequence adds a layer of meaning that’s often lost when visiting in isolation.

Do I need to book in advance?

It is recommended to book in advance, especially during high season when combo tickets can sell out.

How much time should I allocate for the museum?

Around 30 to 45 minutes is ideal for a relaxed, informative visit.
