Everything worked well. There was supposed to be a ticket redemption point between the Baptistery and the cathedral. As there wasn't one, we went straight to the entrance of the cathedral with our online ticket and got in without any problems. We found this information a little confusing. The monumental complex is very interesting and very impressive.

After payment, you receive your ticket directly in your mailbox, so there's no need to make any exchanges. A single ticket for 6 visits for 4 people is very practical. The site itself is splendid, and the passage through the tower is very surprising, as you can feel it leaning under your feet. A great day out for us.

When I checked the website, it mentioned that only children above the age of 8 can climb the tower. When buying the tickets via Headout, it stated that only 11-99 requires a ticket. My child is 9-year-old. Hence, I only bought two tickets, one for me and the other for my wife. I emailed the headout support team to confirm whether or not my child would need a ticket. I was informed that my child didn't need one. When I got there, it turned out that anyone climbing the tower will need a ticket if they are 8 and above.

We don't think it's OK if the ticket only allows a free visit to the toilet. After all, there is so much to see with the ticket that you can spend the whole day there. And I don't know anyone who only has to go to the toilet once a day. The friendliness of the staff is very poor.

Loved going up the leaning tower. Views were amazing. Museums were ok. Not really my thing but there were some interesting historical information. The main buildings I really wanted visit was the cathedral & Baptistery, but sadly they were not open to the public that day as there was a religious ceremony taking place. Shame as I had paid the full amount to visit all 6 buildings which is quite expensive to only be able to visit 4 of these.

Our guide should be in Italian, it was the only one available when I booked. However, our guide also speeks English and this change that she did in the last minute was awesome (my husband and I we are Brazilian, we don't speek Italian but we speek English). It saved our tour. Besides that, she had great sense of humour and gave us a lot of information about Pisa and all the monuments. We rlhqd a great tome with her!!!

PisaPisa Baptistery

See the world’s largest baptistery at Pisa Complex

The Pisa Baptistery, a striking circular building right next to the cathedral, is the largest baptistery in Italy, renowned for its unique acoustics and layered architectural style blending Romanesque and Gothic elements.

How to access the Pisa Baptistery?

The baptistery is located directly in front of the Pisa Cathedral and just a short walk from the Leaning Tower.
Access to the monument is not automatically included in all Leaning Tower tickets; you will have to specifically purchase those tickets that offer entry to the Baptistery.

Things to know before booking Pisa Baptistery tickets

  • Pisa Baptistery is a part of the legendary Square of Miracles where Pisa’s rich legacy of art, architecture, and faith comes together within just a few steps. Visitors who couldn't secure the Leaning Tower climb, are traveling with young children, or are more inclined toward a relaxed exploration of the Piazza can opt for the standard tickets. It offers access to the Baptistery, Cathedral Camposanto, and Opera del Duomo & Sinopie museums—allowing you to experience the full breadth of Pisa’s artistic and architectural heritage without the constraints of timed entry. You can visit them anytime within an year of your booking date.
  • With Pisa Monumental Complex Tickets, you get a complete experience of the Pisa Complex including the Baptistery, Cathedral, Camposanto, Opera del Duomo & Sinopie Museums along with the Leaning Tower climb, in one seamless booking. You can explore all at your own pace, in any order, on your selected date or any day within a year. Only the Tower visit requires a timed entry, making this the most flexible and complete way to experience the Square of Miracles.
  • An optional multilingual audio guide to the Complex ticket enhances your visit, combining the freedom of self-paced exploration with rich storytelling. It would reveal why the tower leans, what the Cathedral represents, the Baptistery’s famed sound, the artistic wonder of the Camposanto, and symbolism behind the sculptures and rare fresco underdrawings housed in the museums.
  • While the baptistery is fully accessible at ground level, the upper gallery requires climbing stairs, which may be difficult for visitors with mobility issues.
  • The timings of the monument differ from the timings of the tower, throughout the year. While the standard operating hours of the baptistery are 9am to 8pm, they may reduce to 9am to 7pm from October 13 to November 2 and further reduce to 9am to 6pm from November 2 to December 21.

Pisa Baptistery in a nutshell

Guided tour group in front of Pisa Baptistery and Leaning Tower, Italy.

Founder: Founded in 1152 by architect Diotisalvi, the Pisa Baptistery is the largest baptistery in Italy and one of the most architecturally intriguing religious structures in Europe. It was built to serve as the ceremonial gateway to the Pisa Cathedral, where all faithful were baptized before entering the church.

Must-see highlights: Unmissable spots of the monument include the octagonal baptismal font, the marble pulpit sculpted by Nicola Pisano in 1260, a masterpiece considered foundational to the Renaissance, and the upper gallery offering panoramic views of the baptistry’s soaring dome and the nearby cathedral.

Current use: Today, the Baptistery is still used for ceremonial baptisms and remains consecrated.

Unique facts: Its double-domed structure creates an extraordinary echo lasting several seconds, turning every sound into a musical experience. It also represents a stylistic bridge between Romanesque and Gothic architecture, with construction spanning over 200 years and reflecting the evolution of medieval art and design.

Frequently asked questions about Pisa Baptistery tickets

Do I need to book tickets in advance, or can I purchase them on-spot on the day of my visit?

We strongly recommend reserving your tickets at least 2-3 weeks in advance, especially during peak season. This is also to ensure you get your preferred time slot.

Are guided tours of the baptistery worth it?

Yes, guided tours add depth with insights into the art, architecture, and history, especially features like Pisano’s pulpit and the acoustics.

How much time should I spend here?

Aim to set aside at least 1 hour for a comfortable and relaxed visit to the Baptistery.

What makes the it worth visiting in the Square of Miracles?

The baptistery stands out for its unique blend of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, stunning acoustics, and Nicola Pisano’s revolutionary pulpit—considered a milestone in Western art. It offers a quieter, more contemplative experience compared to the Tower and adds rich historical and artistic context to the whole square.

What was its original purpose?

The Pisa Baptistery was built for the Christian rite of baptism. In medieval times, baptisms were conducted separately from the main cathedral, often in a dedicated structure like this. It was where infants and new believers were baptized before being allowed to enter the church community.

Can I climb its dome?

Unlike the Duomo dome and similar to the Rome Pantheon dome, you can only gaze up and appreciate the architecture of the structure, but you cannot climb it.

Are children allowed to enter?

Yes, unlike the Leaning Tower which forbids access to children below the age of 8, the baptistery is open to children.
