The Leaning Tower of Pisa is exceptional, and a visit is a must if you really want to appreciate its steepness. You can really feel it on the way up. We'd bought tickets for the cathedral, but on that day it was closed due to a service, which was a shame. They shouldn't sell tickets on days when you can't visit.

Great experience and highly recommended. We went up without queues at the time of our entry. There are lockers where you can leave bags, backpacks etc. since they do not let you go up with anything. Highly recommended experience!

It was relatively easy except we didn't know that you supposed to leave your bags in a locker before going up in the leaning tower of Pisa. The lockers were in a different building so we literally had to run to avoid missing our turn. Visitors should be informed about this in the future.

Top things to do in Pisa

TL;DR

  • Ways to explore: Climb the tower on your own or add an audio guide for context. Guided tours include expert insights at the base before you ascend independently.
  • Additional access: Upgrade to visit all six sites in the Pisa Complex for about €10 more. Cathedral entry is free but requires a timed pass, automatically included with all complex tickets.
  • Unique experiences: Opt for small-group tours (max 15 guests) featuring the Cathedral, tower entry, and optional food or craft-beverage add-ons.
  • Queues and access: Tower access is timed to manage visitor flow. Skip queues of up to 2 hours with pre-booked tickets and secure your preferred time slot.
  • When to book: Book at least 2-3 weeks in advance to secure entry and avoid missing out due to limited slots.
  • Good to know: Arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your timed-entry, later arrivals will not be allowed in and won’t get refunded.
  • Best upgrade: Join a guided tour of the Cathedral and Tower for deeper insights, or upgrade to explore all Pisa sites.

Arrive at Piazza del Duomo

Enter through Porta Santa Maria into the open square where the Tower and Cathedral rise from the white marble pavement.

Begin your ascent

With pre-booked tickets, skip on-site queues and proceed through a quick 5–10 minute security check. As you climb the 273 spiraling stone steps, the tilt creates an odd pull, one side feels heavier, the other lighter, making each turn slightly disorienting yet thrilling.

Add insight with a guided tour

Before you climb, guides share stories of the Tower’s design flaws, its centuries-long lean, and the ingenuity that saved it. Their context adds depth to each level you ascend.

Reach the summit

Step onto the top terrace for a 30-minute visit. From here, terracotta rooftops, the Arno River, and the Tuscan countryside stretch in every direction, Pisa seen from its most famous angle.

Descend and explore the Cathedral

Included with your ticket, the Cathedral’s carved marble façade, bronze doors, and frescoed ceilings reveal the artistic strength that defined medieval Pisa. Audio guides offer clear, structured commentary.

Extend your visit

Monumental Complex tickets include access to five more sites—Baptistery, Camposanto, Opera del Duomo, and Sinopie Museum, valid for the same day or any time within a year from the chosen date, giving you freedom to explore the city’s heritage at your own pace.

Things to know before booking your Leaning Tower of Pisa tickets:

  • Book ahead: Limited slots are released daily to preserve the tower. To secure entry, book ahead, especially in peak season when tickets get sold out 2-3 weeks in advance.
  • Standard entry: The basic ticket to the tower lets you bypass queues, often lasting up to 2 hours in peak seasons. You also get access to the Cathedral, although free to enter, requires a timed-pass to access it, which is already included with a ticket to any monument in the Pisa Square.
  • Extend to cover all sites: At a nominal fee of not more than €10 you can get an end-to-end access to the Pisa Complex, covering all 6 sites, namely the Leaning Tower, Baptistery, Cathedral, Camposanto, Opera del Duomo & Sinopie Museums.
  • Audio guides for insightful commentary: You can upgrade your standard entry or Pisa Complex tickets to include a multilingual audio guide (available in English, Spanish, German, Italian, French, & Portuguese) sharing insights into the square’s unique Romanesque architecture.
  • Guided tour for interactive + streamlined experience: To not miss out on any architectural & historical details, opt for an expert-led tour (available in English, Spanish, & German). Visit the Cathedral with your guide and learn about the tilt before before climbing the tower. You can also extend your visit to include a guided tour through all 6 sites of the Complex.
  • Leaning Tower + Pisa Cathedral + Baptistery guided tour: Too many options and cannot decide? Join a guided tour (available in English, Spanish, Italian, and German) of the top-3 complex sites and experience the full arc of Christian symbolism; birth, life and ascension at the Baptistery, Cathedral, & the Tower, respectively.
  • Food or craft-beverage experience: Pair culture with cuisine on a guided Cathedral visit and priority Tower entry, followed by your choice of a four-stop Tuscan food walk or a craft tasting session featuring local reds, cheeses, and crostini.
  • Make it a day trip from Florence: Turn it into a half-day (6 hours) escape with round-trip transfers and a multilingual escort to handle logistics. Upgrade for a guided tour of Pisa Complex (with entry to all 6 sites) to get end-to-end experience of the city’s heritage, no separate bookings required.
  • Accessibility: The tower involves climbing narrow, steep stairs, making it unsuitable for people with cardiovascular conditions. Due to a lack of elevators, it is not accessible to wheelchair users and people with mobility issues as well.
  • Safety rules: Due to safety concerns, children under the age of 8 are not allowed to climb the tower. Additionally, adolescents between 8-18 years should be accompanied by an adult.

How much time does it really take to ascend?

spiral staircase of Leaning Tower of Pisa

While the experience is unique, it’s not physically overwhelming. Most visitors take 5 to 10 minutes to ascend the 273 narrow spiral steps, depending on fitness level and crowd flow. The descent is slightly faster, taking around 3 to 5 minutes.

However, your total visit time will be closer to 30–35 minutes, which includes:

  • Security checks before entry (mandatory bag check, as bags are not allowed inside)
  • A timed entry slot (you must arrive 10–15 minutes early)
  • Time spent at the top enjoying the panoramic views and taking photos
  • The descent and exit flow

  • The best time to visit the Leaning Tower is early morning or late afternoons to avoid large crowds.
  • If you're traveling with a child under 8 (tower climb is age-restricted), plan ahead so one adult can stay with the child while the other climbs—then switch turns if both wish to go up.
  • Carry a proof of age to be shown at the security check if visiting with a minor.
  • Backpacks are not allowed inside the monuments in the Complex. There's a cloakroom that stores luggage for free. However, if you're carrying large backpacks, consider storing them at luggage rooms outside the Pisa Complex.

Do I need to pre-book tickets even during off-season visits?

While the demand may be lower during off-season periods, tickets are still limited due to daily quotas. Booking in advance is always recommended to secure your preferred time slot.
