It was relatively easy except we didn't know that you supposed to leave your bags in a locker before going up in the leaning tower of Pisa. The lockers were in a different building so we literally had to run to avoid missing our turn. Visitors should be informed about this in the future.

Arrive at Piazza del Duomo

Enter through Porta Santa Maria into the open square where the Tower and Cathedral rise from the white marble pavement.

Begin your ascent

With pre-booked tickets, skip on-site queues and proceed through a quick 5–10 minute security check. As you climb the 273 spiraling stone steps, the tilt creates an odd pull, one side feels heavier, the other lighter, making each turn slightly disorienting yet thrilling.

Add insight with a guided tour

Before you climb, guides share stories of the Tower’s design flaws, its centuries-long lean, and the ingenuity that saved it. Their context adds depth to each level you ascend.

Reach the summit

Step onto the top terrace for a 30-minute visit. From here, terracotta rooftops, the Arno River, and the Tuscan countryside stretch in every direction, Pisa seen from its most famous angle.

Descend and explore the Cathedral

Included with your ticket, the Cathedral’s carved marble façade, bronze doors, and frescoed ceilings reveal the artistic strength that defined medieval Pisa. Audio guides offer clear, structured commentary.

Extend your visit

Monumental Complex tickets include access to five more sites—Baptistery, Camposanto, Opera del Duomo, and Sinopie Museum, valid for the same day or any time within a year from the chosen date, giving you freedom to explore the city’s heritage at your own pace.

Things to know before booking your Leaning Tower of Pisa tickets:

Booking window

  • Reserve early: Tickets sell out quickly in peak months. Book 2–3 weeks in advance to secure your climb.
  • Daily limits: Visitor caps mean same-day or on-site tickets are almost never available.

Entry types and inclusions

  • Standard Tower entry: Timed entry to the Tower lets you bypass general queues which can stretch up to 2 hours in peak seasons.
  • Cathedral access: Cathedral entry is free but needs a timed pass, automatically included with any monument ticket in the Square of Miracles.
  • Upgrades: Add €10 to unlock all six sites in the Pisa Complex for a full, budget-friendly circuit.

Ways to explore

  • Self-guided: Add an audio guide (available in EN, ES, DE, IT, FR, PT) for in-depth context on Pisa’s Romanesque design.
  • Expert-led tour: Opt for a guided tour (EN, ES, DE) for clearer storytelling and easier navigation. Upgrade to include all six sites for a full-complex experience.

Curated experiences

  • Food experiences: Pair priority Tower entry and a guided Cathedral visit with a Tuscan food walk or craft tasting for a deeper cultural dive.
  • Day trip from Florence: Reach Pisa in 45–60 minutes from Florence, most connected city near Pisa. Travel round-trip with ease and upgrade to a guided Square tour for end-to-end convenience.

Policies & accessibility

  • Age limits: Children under 8 can’t climb; ages 8–18 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Mobility: The Tower’s steep, narrow stairs and lack of elevators make it unsuitable for wheelchair users, those with mobility limitations, or visitors with cardiac concerns.

How much time does it really take to ascend?

While the experience is unique, it’s not physically overwhelming. Most visitors take 5 to 10 minutes to ascend the 273 narrow spiral steps, depending on fitness level and crowd flow. The descent is slightly faster, taking around 3 to 5 minutes.

However, your total visit time will be closer to 30–35 minutes, which includes:

  • Security checks before entry (mandatory bag check, as bags are not allowed inside)
  • A timed entry slot (you must arrive 10–15 minutes early)
  • Time spent at the top enjoying the panoramic views and taking photos
  • The descent and exit flow

  • Carry a proof of age to be shown at the security check if visiting with a minor.
  • Backpacks are not allowed inside the monuments in the Complex. There's a cloakroom that stores luggage for free. However, if you're carrying large backpacks, consider storing them at luggage rooms outside the Pisa Complex.

Frequently asked questions about Leaning Tower of Pisa tickets

Is the climb to the tower safe?

The climb involves 273 steps and may not be suitable for individuals with mobility challenges, heart conditions, or vertigo. Floors can be uneven and slippery, so caution is advised. Children under 8 are prohibited for safety reasons and minors between the ages of 8 and 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Can I enter without a ticket?

No, access to the Leaning Tower of Pisa is ticketed. However, you can enter the Pisa Cathedral for free, provided you hold a ticket to at least one other attraction in the Monumental Complex.

Does buying tickets online cost more?

Yes, online tickets include a small booking fee. However, the convenience and guaranteed access make it well worth it, especially since walk-up inventory is limited and often unavailable after the morning rush. Plus, online bookings often allow you to bypass ticket queues, saving exploration time.

Can I upgrade my ticket after purchase?

If you decide to visit additional attractions beyond your current ticket, or want add-ons like a guide, you will need to purchase a separate ticket. Upgrading directly from one ticket type to another is not possible.

What happens if I miss my time slot?

Tickets are strictly time-bound. If you miss your time slot, you will not be allowed entry, and refunds are not provided. Consider arriving at least 15 minutes early to ensure timely access.

Can I book tickets a month in advance?

Absolutely! In fact, we recommend it. Tickets usually become available up to 60 days in advance, and popular time slots sell out quickly, especially during spring and summer holidays. Booking early means you’ll get your preferred date and time, plus peace of mind.

Do I need to pre-book tickets even during off-season visits?

While the demand may be lower during off-season periods, tickets are still limited due to daily quotas. Booking in advance is always recommended to secure your preferred time slot.
