Frequently asked questions about visiting the Leaning Tower of Pisa

Is it free to visit the tower?

No, visiting the interiors of the Bell Tower requires a paid ticket. However, it’s free to explore the exterior of the tower and take photos from the surrounding square, Piazza dei Miracoli.

Is it worth going up the tower?

Yes! Scaling the tower offers a unique experience—you’ll feel the famous tilt as you ascend and enjoy panoramic views of Pisa from the top. It’s especially recommended for first-time visitors and architecture lovers.

How many hours do I need in the Pisa Square?

You’ll need about 2–3 hours to see the Leaning Tower, Cathedral, Baptistery, and Camposanto. If you're climbing the tower and want to explore at a relaxed pace or grab a bite nearby, plan for 4–5 hours total.

How many days in advance should I book tickets to the tower?

It's recommended to book your tickets at least 7–15 days in advance, especially during peak seasons (April to October). Time slots are limited and tend to sell out quickly, so early booking ensures you get your preferred date and time.

What is the fastest way to get to the tower?

If you arrive at the Pisa Centrale train station, take any LAM Rossa bus and towards Pietrasantina and get off at the Torre stop. If it's available to you, it is highly recommended that you take a 20-minute walk from Pisa Centrale to the Leaning Tower of Pisa. This will allow you to soak in the beautiful Pisan landscape with its quaint streets and old buildings.

How do I get to the Leaning Tower if I'm arriving from Florence?

Pisa is a convenient day trip destination from Florence as it is only an hour away. You can catch a train from Firenze Santa Maria Novella station in Florence and get down at Pisa Centrale or you can book Florence Day Trip tickets where we take complete care of the logistics.

How do I enter the tower?

After purchasing your Leaning Tower of Pisa tickets online, display the mobile voucher at the ticket office for your entry. The tower has a large door that appears to be tilted because of the tower’s lean. Once you enter, you will have to wait for you turn to scale the spiral stairs to the top of the tower.

How long does it take to ascend it?

You get a fixed time slot of 30 minutes to scale the tower, head to the top, and descend to its bottom. It depends upon your speed but on an average its a 7 to 10 minute of ascension.

Can I cancel my ticket in the event of an emergency?

Unfortunately, Leaning Tower of Pisa tickets will not be refunded if they are canceled. However, you can adjust/reschedule the time slot up to two hours before your visit. Tickets to the other monuments in the Square of Miracles can be canceled 24 hours before the experience begins.

When is the tower least crowded?

The Leaning Tower is a popular tourist attraction and is busy year round, but visiting during the off-peak months like January to March or October to mid-December might mean fewer crowds. It is also recommended that you visit during the first half of the morning or just before the tower closes for a smoother experience.

Are there any arrangements for children below 8 years if their accompanying adults wish to scale the tower?

If you are a parent/guardian who wishes to go up the tower, please make personal arrangements for your child as children below the age of 8 cannot scale the Leaning Tower. Parents can take turns to watch their child or even take them to neighboring monuments in the Square of Miracles, where they are allowed entry.

If I cannot ascend the tower, how can I make the most of my trip?

Don't worry if you can't ascend the tower; there's still a lot you can do once you're at the Square of Miracles. You can visit the other monuments like the Cathedral, Baptistry and Camposanto. You can also visit the other two museums in the same square, the Sinopie Museum and the Opera del Duomo Museum.

Can I walk on the lawns inside the Square of Miracles?

Certain areas of the lawn are accessible to the public, whereas certain areas aren't. Please read the signs carefully.
